Could all members of the Pupil Council, who signed up with Miss Flannigan to attend the Scottish Youth Parliament talk, please go to Mr Reid's classroom at the beginning of period 2 today (Monday 30th January), where the talk will take place.

S1 Pupils - Outward Bound Trip Payment
A big thank you to all those pupils who have now returned their second Outward Bound payment. A reminder to those who haven’t yet paid that the deadline for this payment is today Monday 30th January and the amount due is £65. Please see Mr Wyllie if you think that you will have a problem getting this money in to the school office before the end of this week.

Armed Forces Opportunities:
The school have been given two excellent opportunities from the Armed Forces (Army/Navy). We have the chance for a group of pupils to be put through their paces from a trained Navy instructor to see what life in the Armed Forces could be like.  This will take place in school and up to 20 pupils can take part so if you think that you are fit enough and would like to test yourself put your name forward.

We also have a small number of spaces available for an Army residential camp where you will get to experience Army life, living and training with Army instructors. If you are interested in either activity please contact Mr Whale in Guidance.

S5 pupils - Nuffield Research Placement Scheme
The Nuffield Research Placement Scheme is aimed at current 5th year students who will be sitting their Highers in 2017 and who are studying any Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Maths (STEM) subjects at that level (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Geography, Computing, Home Economics/Food Technology, Psychology, Music Technology, Product Design, Technological Studies etc.).

The placements help increase confidence and improve key skills including practical, communication, report-writing and presentation skills. It also provides students with excellent experiences & skills to include on CV’s and personal statements. By working with professional scientists and engineers in a real-life environment, the students gain an invaluable insight into a wide variety of careers.

Expressive Arts Show
Tickets for this year’s Expressive Arts Show on 7 February are now on sale in the library.

The show includes a fashion show, dance, music, tap, gymnastic performances as well as photography and art exhibitions.

Adults tickets are £3 and child tickets £1.50. Refreshments will be provided.

LGBT History Month is for everyone – LGBT and non-LGBT people alike. It takes place across Scotland every February, and its aim is to celebrate LGBT lives and culture and to recognise the achievements of LGBT people throughout history.

We are aiming to focus more on our school values by launching our “Values Week”.  Staff should focus on issuing postcards related to each of the school values with a particular focus on the value of the week.

There is a Holocaust survivor visit and presentation for all National 4 and National 5 History students on Wednesday 25 January in the library, periods 3,4 and 5.

There is a Rights Respecting School Award meeting for all House Captains and Vice House Captains in Mr Reid’s room on Wednesday 25 January during P5.  All House Captains and Vice House Captains must attend the meeting as we will be planning for the rest of the year.

All pupils who have handed in their EE2 form to go on this trip should meet in the dining hall at 10.30am tomorrow. Please ask you Period 2 teacher permission to leave 10 minutes early. We should be back at school no later than 12.15pm and you will then go to your P4 class.

As part of our fundraising efforts for our upcoming trip to Ogwini in South Africa, we are organising a Dance’ a Thon. This will take place in the drama studio next Friday (27th January 2017) from 1pm-4pm. Entry cost is £5 and sponsorship forms can be collected from Miss Greig in PE.

Gracemount High School Tin Collection
A huge thank you to all those who brought in donations for our local foodbank (Blythswood Care).  The staff were incredibly grateful and we would have certainly have made a difference to many families over the Christmas period.  Thank you to our S6 pupils: Danielle Manson, Megan McDonald and Demi Montgomery who helped collect and deliver the items.  The registration classes who were our best collectors were:

S4- S6 Pupils - College

1.       Any pupils who are thinking about going to College, the applications for August ’17 courses will open on Monday 16th January

All pupils who apply to College are guaranteed a place however it is a first come first served basis and once courses are full you will be offered an alternative course.  If you know what course you want to do, it would be beneficial to apply as soon as possible so you don’t miss out.


2.       After school on Tuesday 17th January the Guidance team are offering anyone who is applying to College and would like some support with the process a chance to come along to ICT 2 and get help with your application.


3.       If you are thinking about College and would like to visit one of the campuses, meet with lecturers and pick up some information the Guidance team are running a trip on Tuesday 24th January to the Midlothian Campus.  There are only 40 places available, if you would like to come, sign up at the Guidance office from Monday 16thJanuary.
